Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I'm new to pc3k maybe this is a stupid question. I have a Maxtor n40p drive with a g-list shown as 3 dashes when I inspect the firmware. I suspect this means corrupt. I copied the g-list 1bh (02c2:0019) from a good identical drive to the MXPKRMOD directory off pc3000 root and verified that is was there. I then started up the bad drive and selected write firmware module and selected the g-list. It appeared to write but when I checked the bad drive firmware it still reports g-list as "-" "-" "-" - no change.
Why does the new g-list not write over the old one?
Thanks
