Hitachi 500 Gb IDE into 2003 Xserve RAID - quality?

July 18th, 2006, 9:47

Considering replacing all 14 180 Gb HDD on 2003 model XServe RAID firmware 1.5. I have had 5 drive failures since Dec. 2003 [2 in the last week] with Hitachi Deskstar 180Gb IDE, 3 from clicking. I figure I am better off replacing all of them at once rather than waiting for each to fail, and if the system can handle 500gb drives, then I could gain much more volume. I have been advised to stick with Hitachi for these replacements, though the 500 gb models have only been around for a short time. I do not want to pay Apple for overpriced drives either, if possible.

How are they with heat, and have they proven to be reliable?

500GB drives seem to work just fine... Did not notice anything special besides the price...
