Please tell me i'm doing something wrong!!

Hi all,

This is my first post here so be gental.

Ok the problem. I have a Hitachi 2.5 (20GB) disk that was working fine on my laptop then one day XP BSOD! Turn on and starts XP load then a load of clicking sounds and reboot (after 40secs of clicking) infinate loop!.

So used UBCD4WIN to get in to the laptop and copy off some files but alas when trying to browse to the drive (which is spinning fine and BIOS can see ok) I get clicking. At which point start to worry as it wont let me in.

Ran MHDD (very nice) and did a scan and found 4 ! errors and the clicking sound with them rest of scan ran fine. (Errors arround the 9520467 mark) So rand scan with with start and end LBA (fine) and turned on remap. Ran well and got ! BlueBox ! BlueBox ! BlueBox etc etc so look though it remapped ok (got loads of these up to 9521710ish). Run scan again and no luck still got the exact same problem. Hmmm

Then did the Scan with Erase on and got W's at the points. Ran previous again. Still after the normal scan find the bad error (same place). Did these options over & over again one after the other. Still not luck!!

So now question time for you experts......

1) I thought this would remap the bad blocks and then I could get in to the drive. Why dosn't it?

2) What other methods are there? Still cant get in to the drive and really really need some data off of it!!

Stuff i havn't mentioned:

Tried drive in my USB 2.5 drive caddy on main pc and when USB bus tries to ID it and assign drive letter it can't cos it hitts the bad blocks so can't get my PC to see it.

Downloading KNOPPIX_V5.0.1 to try that (4GB download!!) will post results.

Using the MHDD iso image from the site.

Any help/advice would be relly appreciated. I am a IT Techy just never had to go this deep in HD failiers (my servers have RAID ;) )

Any questions then please ask away. Looking to learn more on this (like a true techy)

Oh and happy christmas to all and a great new year :)

The fact that you ran scan with erase waits tells me you probably ruined any chance of pulling data off the drive. Erase waits will kill data.

But only kills the data on those blocks? Therefor there is still data on the rest of the drive yes/no?

Solution!!

Thanks for all your posts to this.

I have found a solution to get in to the thing. A brilliant bit of Linx software (i'm not a linx nut).

http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

burnt the knoppix dvd iso.
booted in to english boot: knoppix lang=en
and ta da! i see the disk and can access it.

Pulled what data i could off and now took a sledge hammer to the old disk.

only joking (Mmmm would feel good though!) may play with some HD software with it now.

Thanks again

Michael
