Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Is it possible to move a drive connected to a RAID controller to another port on that controller and retain the data?
A drive failed on my RAID5 and the replacement drive won't fit in that drive's slot. I can make it fit, but I would need to move a known working and active drive to another slot to do this.

I think it depends on the controller. For example, my raid board does not care about that, so I can attach drives to random ports and my RAID-5 will still be functional

I'm thinking of playing it safe instead. Unfortunately the RAID I'm overseeing is quite old and I won't get the part in until next week. To give you an idea of what I had to order:
12" M-F SCSI Ultra3 Wide SCA 80-pin Extension
They didn't exactly make those for very long :P
Meh, it won't look pretty but it'll work (setting it outside the case). I'm the only one that has to look at it.

Well... I can only wish you best luck with all this stuff...
BTW, manual may tell something about this (if there is a manual of course)
