Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

So, I have this drive....
Seagate Barracuda 300GB 7200.8
MODEL: ST3300831A
P/N: 9Y7284-301
FIRMWARE: 3.01
DATE CODE: 05222
SITE CODE: AMK
This was (sadly) my archive drive. On it I stored all my old source code and projects (stuff not valuable, except to *ME*).
One day, this drive just stopped being detected by the bios. It turns on, I can feel it spinning, but no detection. I tried different cables, master/slave, external ide->usb adapters, no joy on anything.
I'd like to recover my data, but I'm not yet sure if it's worth the $700+ to send it to Seagate. And of course, I can't recover it on my own because the drive doesn't get detected.
Any suggestions?

I think you have not much of a chance, only if you have any friend who works in a data recovery company.
