Seagate Barracuda IV problem

Hi guys

I received an seagate Barracuda IV hdd, model ST320011A, with a strange problem. In mhdd or victoria the hdd is seen as STc2011A :shock:

and if i try to scan or ID or reset or anything else the hdd keeps BUSY and that's all.

Now in terminal it looks like these:

All looks OK (or not?) but ,if i turn error tracing on (001) the hdd keeps sending these:

I have to stop these with CTRL+Z because, other way , it keeps runing forever like this.

Any hints?...What is the hdd trying to do?

Does the BIOS pick up the model incorrectly too?

If so, I would check the IDE connector.

I had a similar problem with a U5 drive.

Turned out one of the connector for the pins on the IDE interface had come slightly unsoldered. 2 minute fix with soldering iron and drive was OK.

i had the same problem the serial no was incorrect i changed the pcb drive become ok.

Thanks for your replys but the problem is't in IDE connector and probably nor in PCB.

I have an update: if i plug only the power connector the hdd spin up , recalibrates, and after 1 or 2 seconds start to seek continuosly for exactly 1 minute and then restart itself , recalibrate again and after 1 or 2 sec. start to seek again and so on ...... :shock:

What is the hdd trying to do?...selfscan????...in terminal don't appear nothing. I can stop the seeking only in terminal with CTRL+Z.

Selfscan cannot start itself if u have started it then stop the selfscan procedure and in selfscan mode hdd doesnot show its id incorrectly.

First, i did't start any selfscan at all. The hdd was doing that from the moment i received.

Second, yes in terminal responds on any command but the seeking stops when i send a command.

Seems like rewriting STUFF resolved somehow the problem. Still , after recalibrate , the drive make some strange sound, high sounds, but only if u listen very close to the drive they are heared. Anyway the drive does not seek anymore, in mhdd or victoria responds normaly, so it is usable.

I'm wondering how it will last this way, probably he will come back (the defect), i don't know....

So, rewrite STUFF was the solution to this problem.
