Ranking: your opinion is required

Hello fellow members!

One member came up with an idea of implementing some sort of rankings in this forum. I have a lot of experience with forum rankings and must note that it is often leads to confusion for new members. So I wanted to ask everyone, what do you think about the following things:

1. Reputation
Forum members can "vote" for another people, vote can be either positive or negative. Numbers are displayed under member's name.

2. Simple Ranks
When a member reaches a certain amount of posts, he receives a special rank, something like this:
< 10 posts: user = newbie
> 10 posts: < 50 = member
> 50 posts: = senior member
and so on

I need your opinion. Please vote and post comments.

Your input is appreciated.

EDIT: Please see my post below: http://forum.hddguru.com/ranking.-your- ... html#42560

I think that is better to do not change it for now.
Imho Simple Ranks show mostly activity than knowledge.

I agree, and that what's confuses people. One can post 200 useless messages and get cool rank and people will misjudge him. It is anyway BAD to judge people, especially for something like post count.

All
Now, with reputation there is another problem. It happens sometimes that people sign up and post a stupid (it may look stupid to other people) message. Everyone voted for "bad reputation" for that message and now he is embarrassed and afraid to post anything at all...

So, both ranks and reputation suck. If anyone does not agree - please let me know your point.

What has just came to my mind is the following. I can implement a "only-positive" reputation number. So that your "reputation number" never gets decreased. It's like when people want to say "thanks" for your post and add to your "reputation". They cannot decreast the number. I do not see any obvious flaw in this method, so please post what you think about it!

its Cool to have both...but how many times a person can vote the same person for positive and negative..??

Quite interesting mechanism is implemented on one forum I'm also a user.

User that started a topic has the ability to vote for any person that posted a reply in that topic - there is extra button "Helpful" visible under each reply.
This way forum users see how many posts given user wrote and how many times he/she was helpful.
Main drawback is that only the topic starter can vote, so if any reply in that topic was helpful to someone else (besides topic starter) he/she cannot vote.

But IMHO anyone who reads this forum for some time quickly knows "who is who" so there is no need for rankings.
