These new WD drives with L-shaped board have special parameters stored in ROM chip on the board. These parameters are unique for the drive and if you just put identical board from another drive it won't work. All it needs is read this ROM chip from bad board and write it to compatible donor. Only after that it becomes fully compatible and starts to work.
To do that you need to have special equipment like PC3000 or you can try to swap the chip manually if you are comfortable with soldering but in this case you are risking to burn the chip and lose last hope for the data.

So you are saying if the ROM chip is destroyed, then so is the data?

I'm not saying that all data is stored on the chip. It's just if this chip is destroyed you won't get access to the data.
In fact there is a way to restore the ROM chip contents from hard drive System Area in case if original ROM is destroyed but that requires special knowledge and PC3000 and it would be more expensive.

Hi Starling,

Any way you could elaborate on the method of recreating ROM from SA?

I have a WD800BB mammoth with burnt ROM :-(

Cheers
