I have a maxtor diamondmax plus 9 6y120L. It spins but, No recognition in bios or windows or any software. Sometimes the bios reads it as a maxtor calypso with 0gb 0sectors, etc.
Any suggestions, the data is valuable and yes this IS my backup. I have an identical drive in my comp now. is the easiest way to replace pcb with known good one?
I have also tried loading into knoppix, pclinux, No go. I also put the drive into usb enclosure. That didn't work.

I am in western pa, I m pretty knowledgable in other computer repair areas. This isn't something I can try myself?

No, unfortunately it's not about knowledge only.
You will need tools to work with hard drive firmware like PC3000 affordable only to data recovery companies.

You sure should try swap the board first. There is a tiny chance it could help.

I only need the drive for a short period to get back one folder, the rest oh well can live without. Just can't see paying thousands of dollars to a data recovery service to get some home video back.
what is MHDD ? what does it do?

About 6 months ago, I was transferring data to or from the drive (can't remember which). it starting clicking noise. I immediately shut down the computer and disconnected the drive. Thinking, when i get time i will grab the rest of the data off b4 it totally crashes. Last week I plugged drive in and I feel it spin up as it clicks (rather high pitched), but I get no recognition in bios, windows or any other software. So I put the drive in an external case I had to see if maybe...
I have tried different scenerios, as master, as slave several different regular data recovery software and methods (knoppix, magic recovery, spinrite, getdataback, dos) all to no avail.
I had a WD that clicked and wasn't recognized in bios or windows, I somehow got that to work with windows vista and the usb drive enclosure so I thought I would tinker with this maxtor.
Where does one purchase pc3000? How much is it? I have a computer repair business and wouldn't mind playing with just to see and learn more.
Thanks for any info.
