Hi all,
Got a MK4021GAS here, with the usual rattling spindle motor problem. Fixed that, now the drive spins up normal, calibration sounds normal, but not become ready.
Just get.....
Any suggestions? PCB? Hope not

Try plug as secondary master with DOS and MHDD...
July 4th, 2007, 9:57
Who's a clever boy.
MHDD picks it up OK.
Scans with errors
Now imaging in reverse mode in Media Tools.
Thanks a million coffeebean!
Just one question.... WHY does it work in DOS?
Cheers

Toshibas work like CS jumper enabled, so U have to config things accordingly.

Yeah Pepe, thanks
But it's odd that a drive exactly the same (MK4021GAS, working) gets picked up fine.
Never mind, got 99.5% image off the drive. 10GB of photos.
Thanks!!

Actually it will work just as fine in anything.
Just that fuxxin pc3000 dongle board requires some additional
jumper for Toshiba (as pointed out by pepe - CS) and in the acelab manual.

Hello Pcimage,
Chanced upon this post while browsing on a similar topic with Toshiba drives.
How did you fix the spindle motor problem? I got Toshiba MK6021GAS drive here, and the same rattling sound you described. Also the image you posted is also what I got from PC3k for STS reg, plus all Error Reg bits are red.
Any reply would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Strauss

Hi,
now I had a similar drive, an MK4026GAX, it was diagnosed in a famous (many people here think they're the only DR solution here) DR company in my country. It had a really worn spindle bearing, though it had pretty good sound. I could move the spindle in the direction of its axis in such a degre I could see it by bare eyes and the spindle could be tilted also. So it was worn anyway.
The quotation of the other company seemed a bit high to the customer so the drive got to me.
It was clicking as if the heads were bad, so I replaced the MHA. The clicking remained. Then I discovered the problem with the spindle so I moved the platter to another HDA together with the known good head (BTW the patient's heads worked well in the donor drive also).
Then I took a deep breath and turned the platter over (I placed it in the HDA with the bottom side up).
Now it is detected OK with no problem and I am retrieving the data.
So it is pretty aggravating that a 'big' company changes things (like flipping the platter in this case, but I have faced other changes in previously received drives from the same company) in the patient drive if the customer doesn't accept the quotation.
Sorry, this's got a a bit long

I just had to write it out of myself...

They flipped the platter? Now that is sneaky!!

I recently had an OLD Seagate ST-225 (MFM, around 20 years old). I was fighting for a long time to just get an MFM setup working. Eventually, it looked like it should work, but didn't. I realized I wasn't hearing the heads moving, so I looked closer at the electronics. Turns out someone cut the head's stepper motor wires at the motor, and completely removed a section of the wires. There wasn't enough wire sticking out of the motor, so I had to replace the motor. Talking to the customer, I found out he took it to a number of places, but he claimed none could recover anything.

How did you find out that the platter was upside down ?
I Have The Same Question As Spildit .... ? .Also I Hope You Are Not Saying I Replaced The Platter From Patient To Donor And Then Also Shifted The Heads From Patient To Donor and Then Kept The Drive Upside Down ?

Hi,
there were not many possibilities. Heads were OK, PCB was OK, the new motor was OK, so there had to be something wrong with the platter. It was obvious they had removed it to access the data, so it was one thing to do to easily make the drive produce some nice error syndrome. I had another thought that frightened me: what if they played around with a magnet?

But I doubt they would dare to do that
I have intentionaly left the name of the firm in the shades, it wasn't the goal of my post. If one takes a look at my location it is easy to guess...

i have also noticed some cases where pcb is dead and if it is not able to repair they break of capacitors and resistance on pcb so no one else could repair i dont know why they do this .

This case is a bit different in that they could have recover the data (probably they did before they could give a quotation) but on a high price. Probably the data isn't worth that higher price.
My price wasn't low either (more than $2

), but I told them why...

Hello peter hr u?
what do u think about this case its mine case , now finally i be able to clone now, with many sound at some zones but only with settings like READ by PIO mode and Skipping sectors 50,000 and changing dont use hardware retries, its not DE,
Im try ease, smart and g list and problem stil
Im need u help with toshiba MK8023GAX case, this disk, spin´s but when heads go out from ramp to plater´s do a movement very fast´s from heads not the normal movement from heads after some time and some sound send DRDY DSC but i cant get data begin´s to again movement and sound like " head crash" . platter surface its ok
but this is report even, connecting only PCB of course toshiba had the most firmware on PCB, only G LIST and anothers are on SA , i need to recover data on this case.
i do head exchange with same model MK8023GAX HDD2D15 C ZL01 T PHILIPINES and stil making the same problem
Report using HDA and PCB show DRDY DSC after some while

Soft reset ...
Ok
using only PCB by terminal show same
After send DRDY DSC; passport its readed OK, all identification, OK, Famly, model, sectors, no pwd, etc even with sector edit i can see the MBR and partition table, even sector 63, and so, but i cant clone to another with DE show ERR ABRT, and when try to clone do a strange sound from heads like" shhhh" . then shw ERR ABRT with anoher soft its impossible to clone it, wih DE i can see the partition table, MFT, but when select Roor, begin to do the "shhh" sound , and turn off and cant get nothing of data i do a head swap, and problem still. not change the "syntomph"
Thanks all u help
