Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I received a RAID 0 array consisting of 2 x Maxtor 6H500R0 drives.
One is (as expected) fine, but the other's bearing has ruptured, spewing nasty oil all over the place.
Last time I saw this was over a year ago, and was remedied by holding the drive at a certain angle, which allowed the data to be recovered.
This one, however, has different symptoms that indicate platter removal which I'm trying to avoid at all costs.
Has anyone else had such an experience with this Maxtor drive?
