WD200 drive help please

July 26th, 2007, 3:35

Hi, just got a Wd 200 drive in that needs data recovered, Bios wont see tye drive, CopyR sees the drive and shws the heading of the drive as wD200 and then shows all funny characters after that,
i have tried a board swap with an identical working drive same thing happens, so i tried a head swap, very clean area to work in and no clean room, after replacing the head from the good drive to the original faulty drive, same thing bios wont detect the drive and copyr same as above,
thinking i may of damaged the heads in the process as i am quite new i transferred the heads back to the original drives, the faulty drive is still faulty and the good working drve is still working fine which indicates that the head swap carried out was successful and no damage done along the way,
as i have isolated the head and the pcb it appears that there is most likely an issue with firmware that may be damaged and this firmware may be on the actual platters( i may be wrong so please feel free to correct me)
if this is the case how can i upload or fix the firmware on the faulty drive, can i somehow copy it from the working drive? do i need any special tools? is there a particular jumper setting i need to do to enter safe mode?
any help will be greatly appreciated,

thx in advance.

Ari

u dont require safe mode to fix this problem but u would need special tools like pc3k for fixing this one , does the head park properly did u try scan the drive on mhdd . If u didnt do it and post result here .

thx for the info

is there another way if i dont have a pc 3000? will try mhdd and post results hopefully today

as for the click noise, after i installed the head fromthe good drive into the original bad drive the head does click when powered on and copyr dosent even see the drive anymore, but if i take the head from this drive and pt it back into the original good donor drive all is well with the donor drive and the original faulty drive with the original head goes back to showing up in copyr with funny characters but there is no click drive.

thx guys

Hi,
the problem is not with the heads, but rather with FW.

Thx for the answers guys,

Pepe, i guess with no pc 3000 there is no way to rectify the problem? i would imagine a pc 3000 will fix this quite easily or it is still a big job ?
i have seen the salvation data for wd are these tools any good and would they fix these issues with this drive? has anyone had any experience with salvation data?

thx

Ari

Hi,

it is hard to tell. But it is definitely an advantage if one has PC3k. Others may be good as well, but I don't have any info.

For Countries,
That have WDC And Maxtor Drives ,Salvation is Cheap And Not BAD For The Job .But It Cannot Touch PC3K in Anything [ I Mean a Bundle Package ]
