Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have a Samsung SP2514N (firmware VF100-50) with a issue I can't resolve. The problem is with AAM (automatic acoustic management). All the programs I've used show that AAM is enabled with the value 0x00 (0=zero). I've tried HDD Scan 2.8, the latest Hutil utility from Samsung, the latest version of Feature Tool from Hitachi (which I know it works with other hdds than hitachi's, I've used it on Maxtor, WDC and Samsung hdds) and nothing works, I've even tried on different systems. I can disable or enable AAM, but I can't set the AAM value, which remains at 0x00, no matter what program I use (Ftool - default or custom, Hutil - has 2 options, quiet and another which should set a higher AAM value). With HDD Scan I can't set the AAM or enable/disable on any hdds on my primary PC. I even tried setting the AAM value on another system with a different chipset/ata controller (I saw that I couldn't set the AAM state/value on my primary PC, on several hdds: Samsung SP1614N, Maxtor 5T020H2, Samsung SP1602N). I succeded in setting the AAM value for those hdds on the 2nd PC. But even on the 2nd PC I can't set the AAM value for SP2514N.
Please... Can you give me some advice? Could it be a firmware bug/fault (firmware VF100-50)? Could it be that the firmware is corrupt (I understand that it resides on the hdd's platters, not on some flash). How can I find the cause? I don't have any other problems with it. The SMART status is excellent. If you need more details about the drive, please tell me.
PS: I've tried to contact Samsung support, but as usual, for technical problems, they tell you to call some number. I can't call that number, I'm from Romania (Europe). It would be to expensive and not worth it. Also I don't know no Samsung support office in my country.

...

how about the way it stores the AAM setting?
I've tried hutil 2.10, it can disable AAM, but on enabling it, the AAM value is reported as "undefined" in hutil, other programs read AAM as enabled with the AAM value at 0 (zero)
