Samsung HD160JJ not becoming ready. HELP!!!

August 23rd, 2007, 6:11

Hi,

Got a HD160JJ here, PCB was burnt.

Changed for same PCB.

Now drive spins OK, and makes calibration noise.

BUT, never becomes DRD, just BSY forever.

Any suggestions guys?

TIA

Sean

IF DISK STILL IN BSY ALWAY YOU HAVE A ROM INCOMPATIBILITY, YOU MUST SERCH ANOTHER PCB BOARD, OR SOLD THE ROM FOR THE BAD PCB IN TO A GOOD PCB.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies. Another head always welcome :-)

I have already tried......

1. PCB Swap (this drive has no ROM btw)
2. Soft Reset
3. Hard Reset
4. Hot swap.

Still BSY :-(

Now, if it were something like bad P or S-list then surely a Hot Swap would work?

I can't understand what's up with this one. But then again, I don't see too many Samsung!

I did notice that on the patient PCB, the SATA power connector has it's key broken off, so its likely/possible that the client has connected the power connector on the wrong way round.

If that was the case, then I guess the preamp could have blown, but surely then the drive would not calibrate and/or would make knocking noise?

TIA

Sean

PCIimage,
I would suggest you buying a complete hdd for this recovery .

Hence the Hot Swap ;-)

Hi,

Sorry, I thought I posted my message earlier but it apparently did not happen...

Have U checked the TVSs?
BTW in the case the power connector is plugged in in the wrong direction, there will be absolutely no contact between the drive and the power connector since the contacts will be on different sides...
So this would not cause a big problem.

Pepe,

No problem, thanks for the reply.

Do I need to check the TVS's? The new PCB works fine on the donor drive, would they differ from drive to drive?

Many thanks

Sean

pcimage.

I got once dealing with this model. In my case, the PCB burnt also and head stuck to the platter.

Hope that's something you can consider.

cryoborgofthevenus,

thanks for your reply.

I have put a known good PCB on, and the head is not stuck, spins normally, and even makes calibration noise.

It's most strange, it's as if the wrong ROM is on the PCB, but there isn't one!

It does everything but become DRD :-(

Hi,

The ROM is incompatible.
try to repair the original PCB!
I suppose there's no external ROM, so the processor has to be in working condition to do the recovery.
That's why I told U to check the TVSs on the patient PCB, they might be shorted, but it is possible that other components survived the disaster.

pepe

Ah, right. There's a masked ROM, right?

Thanks

Great news!

It's working.

With guidance from Pepe, I fixed the original burned PCB and the drive seems to be mended!

Cheers Pepe!!

@pcimage
Read the quotation below and tell me if U have seen this somewhere before, if not ask Pepe

"If it wasn't for the nature of our services we would say here that we hope to have you as one of our clients. However, that would not be appropriate. Let's just say you can count on us when your data is in danger."
