How to get a siezed motor going on a Hitachi 3.5" Disk

August 25th, 2007, 1:32

Hi All,

I have a Hitachi Deskstar 500 GB (Model: HD725050VLAT80) which is making a buzzing sound, almost in a musical tone (ee oo ee oo).

We have elimited the PCB, the PCB has been tested and working fine. The heads are not stuck to the platter. The motor is unable to be moved manually.

The clockwise 'twist' method on power on has been unable to free the motor, no other method has been tried.

I'm sure this must be a common type of problem, any tips on how to get the motor going again?

I do have a class-100 clean room and do have 3 spare disks identical BUT i do not plan to move the platters into another disk as it's a 2 platter, 4 head disk. This disk belongs to a 4 disk raid-0 set so it's critical not to take any risks.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Zed.

This is extreemely difficult...I can not figure out how to make the motor spins again without carefully disassembling the platters first...Very risky ....Sorry for my humble experience.

May be pepe can help...

no others Option. swap platter to other working Motor.
I play with seagate 2 platter before in 72.8 and success. But You need to do it very carefully. because 2 platter will be problem with platter alignment and platter gapping after you swap to other media..

I hope you success..

Thanks
