The end of traditional Data Recovery

Hi Mates,

I heard recently that a 40GB semi-conductor-based hard drive will be shipped in some of the new Dell laptops. Is the end of traditional DR as we have known it coming to an end? Will it turn into becoming EEPROMs programmers? Any thoughts?

Expensive 40GB drives are nowhere near replacing 160GB mechanical drives. People have been waiting for literally decades for RAM/DRAM/EEPROM/FLASH to eventually replace the Hard Drive. However, as the years go by, we find more reasons for needing more space, and Hard Drives are the only technology that can keep up. Vista will make things more interesting, as it can take advantage of 'Hybrid Drives' that have some flash on board. One way or another, we're probably going to be recovering data from flash soon...

yes i agree but flash technology fail less as compared to mechanical drives .

I agree. However, I can see a point in the future where a mechanical drive died, is completely unrecoverable, but you might just find some useful data in the flash section. Now all we'll need are the tools to access it..
