Platinum 160GB 7200RPM ATA / 133 HDD Calypso III Maxtor

HELP !!

No doubt like everyone else on this forum I have just experienced a hard drive failure and I need some help.

I smelt smoke and turned off my external HDD enclosure. When I removed the HDD I noticed that the SMOOTH chip was burn out. I imagine that if the PCB board is replaced then I MIGHT have a chance in recovering the data?

I would appreciate any help or advice on how best to recover the data on this drive. any suggestions on where to get spare parts would also be appreciated.

I have learnt that external HDD enclosures are crap unless they are properly ventilated. anyway, look forward to any resplies.

Regards
JT

Hi,

Look for the same model of HDD with the same type of processor (eg: ARDENT C8-C1). This should be matched at least.
If your drive has U401 installed (Flash ROM), try to find a similar board with U401 installed and swap this IC, this way U will get a fully compatible PCB.

pepe

Please see the attached image. This is all the information I have. There is no label on the PCB. The other side of the drive identifies it as a Platinum 160GB 7200RPM HDD.

You didn't even post model name of your drive.
For example, if you have 6Y160P0 you have to find another Maxtor 6Yxx0P0 with the same CPU type (Ardent C8-C1 in your case).

Hello~ You can find much info on both sides of HDD, like below:
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB ATA/133 HDD
YAR41BW0
6Y160P0042811
PCB:
M8FYB
301862101
ARDENT-C8C1-840UK
SMOOTH-L7250E 1.2

For removing the PCB, just using a "6-star" screw stripper to remove the 5-screw.
Then you can separate the PCB out.

Sorry, I just noticed you said there was no label on your drive.
Then you need to find PCB with the same CPU type (Ardent C8-C1).

Hi all, many thanks for your ongoing support. Here is an image of the top of the HDD. As you can see none of the info as shown on the Maxtor drive. Where to now?
