Hi Gurus
I have WD5000AAKS SATA 500G, it sounds like it is not enough power to start the motor, strugling to start.....it is not the motor problem or sticktion i have checked.
I suspect the motor controller SMOOTH L6284 but not 100% sure as i don't have the datasheet, anyone got one?
I have an identical drive with different firmware WD5000AAKS , swapped pcb from faulty drive to good drive, it sound exactly the same strugling to start motor.
Unfortunately WD5000AAKS has no flashrom, i think it is embedded in MCU, does anyone have any experience with this drive? Please look at the photo, what are these chips marked as U21 and U23? There's another one close to RAM but unmarked.
Thank for your help.

Hi,
if the spindle runs freely, check the motor windings with an ohm meter and compare the values to the working one!

Hi Pepe, yes the windings ok, 2.2ohms, do you think its the motor controller L6284 problems? Q1,Q2 etc are ok, diodes ok too

Does the spindle rotate freely?

yes spindle is rotating smoothly, i suspect the pcb...this is another tough one to crack.

hi Pepe, a little misundertanding here....i swapped good pcb to bad hdd ..then the hdd is fine but because different firmware the drive only recognized as alias. However i took bad pcb and put in good hdd, the drive strugling to power up. sorry for the misunderstanding.

Then swap ROM, or read it out and program into the good one.

pepe, ROM is i believed embedded into MCU, i cannot locate any ROM on pcb

ROM place on this PCB is U12
If drive is recognized as alias with good PCB... U have problem with SMOOTH...
U must replace SMOOTH, or find the same drive with very similar date... (the same ROM version)
PS Can U read ROM in PSV (kernel) mode...?

Possibly some one else desolder it before that HDD get to your place TerraNova ?

no cry, the new sata WD no flashrom, i have check WDs 320G 500G and 750G SATA all no flashrom

Hello my friends,
I read this post, but I don't see the answer how to match donor PCB for this drive if it has no ROM as Terranova realised? What is "uniqe" which I must recover from burnt PCB to get access to my drive?
I have exactly the same as Terranova:
MDL: WD5000AAKS-00TMA0
DATE: 25 JAN 2007
DCM: HANCNV2AB
My also is also burnt
Best Regards

Yes. I have discover that this New Model AKS From WDC have No ROM. Rom was embedded in MCU. I suggest try to change SMOOTH Chip. If Not Change MCU but it hard to do.
thanks

Hi,
Yes. New WDC SATA drives AAJS AAKS BEVS... have No Rom.
(Processor is 88i6745 instead of older 88i6545)
88i6545 need external serial Flash.
88i6745 have Flash memory embeded.
If processor is not damaged - it is possible to read ROM in PSV mode (4-jumpers)

Swapping the MCU is not hard if you have a hot air station. I certainly wouldn't attempt it without one.
