i have many of the tools, just not the exact know how, of how to fix this exact problem with them. i can use a external enclosure to gain access to the drive where i can run software like "recover my files" on it, but since the wrong size is showing up its reading sectors that don't exist. i can also hook it up as a fire wire device or as an ide device (have a few spare pcs) i know this is fixable, i just don't know how

In order to repair this drive, you need access to the service area, which is not possible if the drive is in an usb or firewire enclosure.
Even when hooked to an ide-port it is in my opinion impossible to solve this.
You need at least pc3000.

For this cases u need tools for access Engineering Cylinders, this area are on negative way, any program like winhex or , another sector edit only access on positive way this area called too System Area Diskware its a hidden zone from factory where its information for calibration, access to data and settings, etc for access the HDD
If u get , this tool´s its not simple to use like try to write a Bin file on a motherboard to update firmware because HDD´s are piece of engineering this is some wich some newbies need to understand are , Mechanical, Electronic, and Microcode parts, on PCB´s and written on Platters too on many branch´s . and u need to have knowledgment about the way of comunication betweeen HDD and the HOST this is very important, for u and many newbies who want to do a data recovery
read my post why its need it
We need to understand even HRT, PCI, and another´s tools are not magic tools
