Salvation WD Doctor

Anyone got this?

And tried to use the external ROM Programmer?

I'm buggered if I can get mine to work.

Tried 4 different known good ROM chips and soldered to the programmer, they read OK and erase OK.

But write to ROM and it reports hundreds of errors.

Use Winhex to compare the data, and it looks like..

4 bytes written oK, followed by 16 byte not written, 4 Ok, 16 bad etc etc etc

Salvation just say that I've not soldered the ROM properly.... its not rocket science to solder a 8-pin ROM!!!

Yet I solder the ROM to a Baracuda PCB and writes the ROM, perfect!

So, I'm just wondering if it's me, the device or what?

I would like to fix up some WD PCB's with buggered ROMs to make good ones.

I'm waiting for some pamona clips , then I am going to try
to solder pins to the programmer to clip to , then I can reprogram corrupt
chips with out any soldering involved .

Does your WD doctor freeze at times ?

Why do you need pamona clips? Easy enough to solder.

Yes, my WD Doctor does freeze at times, but not half as often as Maxtor Doctor!

What do u think of Seagate Doctor? I'm considering it.

If I get the clips , then I don't have to worry about soldering and unsoldering
( my solder skills leave a little to be desired ,
as the older I get the more my eyesight deminishes)

As for the Seagate Doctor , it seems to be a good tool,
but I haven't had a chance to really get to use it yet.
There are some models that aren't supported yet
and of course that's the drive I need to fix
The documentation could of course be better

I actually got all of the salvation tools at one time and got a pretty
good deal
I am a little disappointed that seagate put plastic spacers in some
of their Hard drives which makes platter swapping a no-go

i've just bought the salvation tools for Seagate. I'll compare it with pc3K Udma and will let you know the outcome.

I did the same thing Steve did - soldered the clip onto the programmer so I wouldn't have to resolder every time I need to program the ROM. I had some problems with the programmer, but it turned out to be the connection(clip wasn't snug). I also ran into a lot of (seemingly) bad 25P10V chips. So I bought a bunch of them for about $1 each

I'll let you know if I have any other problems.
