Acer Aspire 3000 - Recover Data from HD of dead laptop

November 11th, 2007, 13:29

Hi, bit of a long shot.

We are currently looking at buying a new PC and as if taking offense my Acer laptop has died. Its a problem with power, tried a new power supply but that didn't cure it (it may just work if I could charge the battery up).

The thing is, as we are on course to replace it I don't really want to spend a lot to fix it (especially as it was a cheap 'do for now' purchase last year'), on the other hand if we could just get access to the hard drive and transfer off the parts we want I'd then happily chuck it.

Is there a way to be able to access these things, its a Seagate 40GB, model ST94019A Hard Drive.

I could take it to a shop, but without looking at it I have no idea what data I want to pull off.

I am presuming that if I bought a new laptop that I could not just switch hard drives to transfer what I want onto a DVD (presuming drivers for hardware and that's even if the HD's are comaptible).

I suppose I want to know is there any external hardware that can be used to read this or is a shop my best bet. If I use a shop, in what format would I expect my data.

(note, I seem to be trawling forums at the moment, after the first I realised replies came infrequent t at all on that one, after the second and a search I realised there was never replies to similar tales of woe, hopefully this is the god of all HD forums :good: )

Hi Petayu,

You just have to shop for an external usb enclosure for a 2,5" disk. These are common and quite cheap.
Then you can attach your disk via usb to another pc and copy your data.

Best regards,

Dobre

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping there would be something, just didn't know what to look for.
