D540X-4K Head Replacement

December 18th, 2007, 1:19

Does anyone know what identifying numbers I need for a successful head transplant on a D540X-4K? This drive seems to be half Maxtor and half Quantum. I found a LE06A011-01-B but I'm not sure if its compatable. Thanks.

Hi,

this one is tricky, it is almost impossible to find a fully compatible MHA due to the different alignment positions of the heads.
All u can do is to match at least the first letter of the code bellow the serial number and hope or align the heads.

Ok. I transplanted the donor heads into the failed drive but now I have a new problem. The heads go from center to outer edge three times then stay on the outer edge. After that it reports ready but does not ID. Before the transplant I could read from head 0 and 2 but not 1. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi,

this is what I call head misalignment... with 60G it is pretty hard to get them aligned.

The donor was spot on as far as identification numbers and all. In fact, the serials are really close. Do you have any advise on aligning the heads? Thanks.

What kind of clicking it had originally? Ding-ding-spinfaster-spinslower-ding-ding-ding? If yes then it's usually bad preamp and it's much easier to just swap it and keep the original heads.

Never clicked, just could not read from head 1. 0 and 2 work fine in DE.
