Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160gb PCB dead ?

December 28th, 2007, 16:35

hey my harddisk died the other day
it was an a mobile enclosure. i switched it on . it started for a sec
and died straight away. after that i couldnt turn it on and when in a pc the bios couldnt detect it.... the harddisk worked in that mobile enclosure for ages.. part from this time.

so i assume the PCB is dead. Do you guys also think so ?
What are the chances the preamp died aswell. anyway to fix the pream if this happens ?

Here are my details

YAR41BWO
smooth chip ver1.2
M8FYB
6Y160P0042811

i am looking on ebay right now to find somethin suitable. as i understand any PCB is compatible as long it has FYB OR 6Yxxxxxxx28xx ? is that right ?

First try a nice karate-chop, if it works :P :P

If it doesn't, then attach the drive in the IDE port of a desktop, and check out for the ATA signals being released by drive (If there are any) that wheather you are getting DRDY, ERR or BSY or whatever, then we will diagnose the "actuall" problem and it's solution.

BTW, don't hit it too hard while punching or kicking.

"that wheather you are getting DRDY, ERR or BSY "

as far as i can tell the hdd doesnt even power up. i cant hear anyting or feel the disk spinning

IF the drive does not power up, it could be either

a) Stiction or bearing problem (In this case you should hear some noice)

b) PCB problem

swap the PCB with a match from ebay and let us know if this resolved it.

ATA signals for better understanding go to http://www.t13.org and read ATA standards.

Best of Luck and happy New Years!
