Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have a Hitachi HTS721. Drive doesn't read the passport but by manually selecting the model I can get to the utility. Running the SA check it shows that copy 0 of PSHT (P-list) is bad. I checked and there is a bad sector on it, although copy 1 works fine. I tried writing the modules onto an identical drive and doing hot swap but it didnt work.
Is there any way to relocate that module to another place (sector)?

Ask ACE this question,
See if they know - probably one of few options for repair of fw for newer Hitachi.
They know, see if they will tell you - assuming you legal user, that is.

I have a Hitachi HTS541 with the same problem, damaged PSHT in copy 0 but copy 1 is OK. Can this be done within PC3K? I have both PCI and UDMA, surely one must have this feature?

You should be able to read the good copy and write over the bad (unless the media is bad at that location) using the PC3000.
IBM / Hitachi has 3 copies of the FW. One time I had a drive with all 0 copies testing bad; I replaced them with 1 copies and recovered 100%.

If the media is bad where PSHT is stored, how can I repair this disk?

Is your chief goal data recovery or repair?
If data recovery, I think (but may be wrong - I haven't checked lately) that the Hitachi utility may allow you to choose to start from one of the other SA copies. I'd look for that. I don't know of a way to fix the underlying area on the HDU.

I only need the data. I can not seem to find this function. Anyone else know how to start the disk from an alternate copy? Copy 1 and Factory copy are both fine. I now have 2 exact disks with the same problem!
Thanks

I have read within the UDMA PC3K manual that the hitachis have seperate copies of the modules but manipulation of these copies is not implemented in the current utility.
Maybe this is something I will need to look into Salvation Data for...
