Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have one of these in for recovery.
I say URGENT - otherwise the chap will send it off to one of the RIP=OFF companies who will charge him £400 just to "diagnose" the problem....
However, the drive is displaying no obvious signs of problems whatsoever; it boots up , the heads sound as though they calibrate - but then - nothing. Depending on which PC I am using, and which program, it sometimes shows up as "DISK 3" - but no info available, and "cannot access."
Unsurprisingly, PC3K PCI does not even recognize this.
I'm totally and utterly snowed under with work, guys - cannot really cope with everything I have on at the moment - so any relevant experiences of this drive - i.e. "SEND IT BACK" or "NEW HEADSTACK WILL WORK - DO IT" appreciated. I can't afford to spend much more time on it, but I would seriously like to help this client, as it contains the only pics and videos he has of his first-born child.
Thanks
Duncan

1. This is new WD drive and PC3000 does not support this kind of drives yet
2. If it's heads problem - it is very bad because this one is hard-to-do drive
3. Try to not power it up often - you can kill it completly
If you really need data - you can send this drive to our Amsterdam facility

Thanks, Doomer
But can I just ask why your Amsterdam facility should be more capable of data recovery than what I am?
Thanks

Hi Odiferous,
Talk to ACE, this drive is very similar to Marvell types supported by pc3000.
In fact ROM access is the same, but because ACE like to work with families
they won't even read this drive.
I reckon it would take ace research experts about a day or two to write simple update
to WD Marvell to included basic reading / writing of first track for this BEVS
and ROM reading / writing, modification.
Will they do it ? wait and see if their support matches their pricing stricture.

That's obvious
Because we know how this drive works and we have our own methods and software to fix such drives

Hi!
Did you try to scan this drive?
No, then do it.
It is probably head.
Let me know the outcome.
