Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi all,
can anyone make a rough estimation on the extent of this failure? The HDD has been grilled within an overheated notebook and now refuses stop being BSY. What I'd like to know is: is this probably a common fault with this models, would it probably involve electronics, mech/platters, or both?
Do the Samsungs have a service mode like Seagates to make them talk a bit about their problems via serial console?
regards
