Power Surge wiped a drive ??

March 21st, 2008, 11:49

Could a power surge have wiped a 200gb hard drive? I did a full dd and see nothing but zeros, ran the hdd tool and the drive scans fine just see no data. Do you guys have any other hints. Could some part of the pcb be shot and read zeros instead of the data, I had about 180GB of data on the drive, I have tried gparted to try to guess the partitions and is comes up empty as well. So no partitions and no data.

Thanks for any hints, George.

Hi!

Power surge could not delete data from a drive.
At least I never heard of such thing.

Could be assume that the PCB is OK then or is it possible that part of it is toast and that is why its not reading any data?

I just had the same thing with another 500GB SATA seagate drive, no power surge this time just shut down and them reboot and now all the software I run on the drive say there is no partition any clues, I did run gpart and it sees nothing. How can a system wipe out a drive.

This is not likely that data disappears.

I don't believe in magic!

The has to be a reason.

Yes, a burned microchip on a PCB could be a problem.

Lack of right equipment also could be a problem.

whats the right equipment, I assume that just plugging the drive in should work, right after the reboot a second drive shows no partition.

You will need some type of recovery equipment or at least some good software.

Any hints, name of software, I assume what had happened to these two drives is some sort of firmware corruption, how would I check this?
