Complaint: USB HD recognized, but wrongly, drive letter not appearing.

Using DELL Inspiron 6400, XP SP2, TREKSTOR Pocket.x.u. External 80GB HD(Model: PHAO2Uv2.0, Serial: 061035470, 1 yr old)

Details:

I was using trekstor pocket xu 80GB HD for the past 1 yr without any problem and i was very happy with the performance and built of HD.

Usually when i connect to system, it will get recognized as WDC WD80 0811 (or something like that ,i dont exactly remember).

But now it is getting recognized as WDC_ROM_MODEL-SCORPIO 0811, and the drive letter is not appearing. But USB icon is appearing in the system tray. safe removal is also working.

In device manager, it is appearing under disk drives as "Disk drive" without a name. No drivers are loaded for this device. uner Policies>write catching & safe removal, options are not active. Under Volumes> Volumes are not listed & when Populate button clicked, error msg "Volume info for this device cannot be found. This may happen if the disk is a 1394 or a USB device on a windows 2000 machine" is coming.

There is also some slight ticking sounds coming from HD in the initial some 3-5 sec (till its getting recognized) of connecting, and not after that.
Indicators are working.

I tried with other systems also, same problem.

There are so much of data contained in this HD, More than that, i want to get my HD working back again.

So i humbly request you to look in to this matter and get me the solution at your earliest.
Iam from Banglore, india and i like to know whether there is any authorized centre or any other centre of your recomendation.

Waiting for your earliest respone

A solution? Data Recovery company can get your data. Likely best to toss the drive, but it might be fixable if it's just firmware corruption. Personally, if the data is worth more than the drive, it's worth putting it on a new drive.

If that's out of the question, you can take the drive out of the enclosure, and with the right adapter connect it to a desktop. Also, I've seen some success with a Knoppix boot cd where Windows wouldn't see the drive. The odds are low you'll get anything this way, but I believe in beginners luck.

But one thing i like to know.

If the HD inside the enclosure is exactly like my laptop HD, i can try it on my laptop. My ext HD is 2.5" one.

But the problem is, its already making some ticking sounds in the initial few seconds till it is getting recognized (which might be a physical damage ,may be a head problem).
so if i keep on trying this, will it cause more harm to my HD. For me, data is important. But more than that i want my HD back , even if it ends in loss of data.

If it is a head problem, can it be replaced. what else could be the cause and solution.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

if data is important, I really recommend taking it to a pro DR company as they could precisely diagnose the problem (which cannot be done remotely) and probably they can come up with a solution.
