2 WD4000YR drives with different issues

April 15th, 2008, 12:04

Hello all, I have two WD4000YR drives. Both died with in a month of each other with different issues. Their warrintees run out in November this year so I would like to try to get the data off the drives before I send them back.

Drive one:
Was having a problem reading past the first sector but was picking up ok. Now when I tried it today I get a click every 3 or 4 seconds. But is constant and does not stop after 5 or so.

Drive two:
This one does not pick up in the OS or BIOS. It spins up ok. But just does not pick up. I have tried connecting Via a USB adapter but get the same thing. Tried a few different OS's Windows XP, Vista, DOS (it crashes out when it tires to detect the drive) and Linux. Although it was a stripped down Linux and I was not unfamiliar with it.

Any thoughts on OS's of software I can try.

Oh and I have also swapped out the PCB's for the two drives with each others. But they get same problems as before the swap. So no change on each drive.
