Maxtor STM3160212A no spinning

May 24th, 2008, 10:51

Hello,
I have a Maxtor STM3160212A with no spinning. I did not find the error on the PCB. Have anyone an idea or can tell me witch is the firmware chip?
Thanks
Wally

Most probably your PCB doesn't have any problem and you got seized motor.
What happened to the drive?

The drive stop spinning, but I did´t think it was a motorproblem, there are not voltage on the connector from the PCB to the motor.

Any idea?

Thanks Wally

If you swap PCB from another PCB, even if it's not from same model, you can check if drive spins or not. If it spins, you have a PCB related problem, if not, you have a motor problem (or heads stuck eventually).

Now I tried the original PBC on a ST3500830ACE and no spinning, than I put the PCB form the ST3500830ACE on the STM3160212A no spinning, too?
Motor and PCB broke?

And the ST3500830ACE was spinning with it's original PCB right?

Yes

It can be burned PCB and pre-amplifier. You have to open the drive and check it inside.

I suspect a siezed bearing burned out Smooth IC on PCB. Wouldn't be surprised if the Smooth IC on the new board gets hot.

I would not recommend openning a drive.
You can find out a problem without openning a drive.
If you will need a service on your drive, it would cost double if you open the drive.

Thanks for help to all,

it was only the PCB broke. Today it comes the spare-hdd, it was a Seagate ST3160212A (no Maxtor) with the same firmware. First I try the good PCB from the 500GB Seagate and............... no spinning on the spare-hdd, next step I put the 160GB PCB on the 500GB no spinning again. Third step the Seagate ST3160212A PCB on the Maxtor STM3160212A and the HDD spinning but no sectorcopy possible, my copyprogramm means it is a SCSI-HDD. But the PC3000 make a copy with out any error. What I did not understand is no spinning with the 500GB PCB, the connectors from the heads and motor on the same position. OK diffrent prozessor but the same IC for the motor.

Thanks again to all

Wally

Hi,

probably there are different preamps in the 160G and the 500G models and the FW could not handle it.
However we would need a terminal report to prove this .

Maybe the motor controller on the 500gb pcb was different from 160gb pcb .
