Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 120GB-Powered Reverse

May 26th, 2008, 18:22

Hi all,

I was trying to use a Bytecc HDD USB on my Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 120GB HDD and ended up powering it up in reverse ( i was not paying attention and didn't think it would fit anyway, but it did) well it started to smoke on the bottom and now i can see the chip that is fried. any way i can fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Do you need the data, or just want to fix the drive to use? How much is it worth to you?

If the data is truly important, the smartest move is to take it to a pro. If it's not, you can try buying a donor drive, and switch the PCB. If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can try and replace or remove the TVS, and/or replace the fuse. You might have got lucky, and not fried the rest of the board.

if I switch off the PCB, are the TVS and fuse all on the PCB or are those seperate?

TVS and fuse are on the PCB.
