Maxtor 80 GB - shorted power.

I have maxtor diamondmax 9 80 GB ATA hard drive.
I accidently connet mold connector reverse way makes PCB burnt.
There's no power to driver but I thought it would be easy to fix if I could get same model
for pcb replacement. I got same firmware & same model driver from 2 different user off ebay.
After I tried both PCB just give me clicking sound after 5-10 sec of initial power up.
I though it could be firmware issue or something relate to PCB board itself but after
I swapped PCB for working drives, they're working fine even PCB model# is not same.
(One is F4FYA and other is F8FYA).
It's just dead one is giving me clicking sound.
When I shorted power, beside PCB board, would it possible to damage some motor controller
inside hard drive ?

Current sympton is after initial power-on, drive spins.. head is moving and try to reading something..
after 5-10 seconds.. start generating loud clicking sound.

Any experts could tell me anything else I could try ?

I hate to bear bad news... It sounds like you fried the preamp, which is in the sealed part of the hard drive. Changing that means changing the head stack, and that's pretty difficult. If your data is important, now is the time to consider a professional. You could try it yourself, but the odds are against you, and you will almost certainly ruin the chances of anyone else recovering your data as well.

Maybe you can have another try of pcb hot swap.

What is the origianal HDD's code? F4FYA? There is an other important thing. The parts of the bad drive must quite same with the new drive. For example: the old drives code is NMBD (this code is under the firmware code), where the N means the motor type (nidec), M the head preamp type (Marvell).... May the old drives head preamp is different from the new. (the differences are only 3-4 resistors, and some SMD parts on the PCB). If the codes are simiar, the problem is with the head preamp, what is inside the HDD .

based on my experience I would argue with your interpretation of the codes...
anyway there is a way to check the preamp, it is described on this forum some months ago, search for the topic!

I also think so, but it is preferable to make proper diagnostics, and THEN draw the conclusions. Drives can always surprise us...

This code interpretation is from my experience. Maybe im wrong .
This code was very good for me. when i changed a bad board (what belonges to a NMCA coded HDA) with a KGGD series board... the HDD wont work only the clicking sound. But with a similar board worked with no error.

For a few days i had got a bad 6Y160P0 drive (YAR41BW0 KMGD with 4 head, B6FRB PCB). The combo burnt. I hadnt a good PCB for it, but i had a BAD 7Y250M0 drive with a good PCB (YAR51HW0, KMGD too, but with 6 head, the PCB is U8FYA). I had put the good PCB on the 160 GB, and it spin up, no clicking sound, and in Safe mode (with a 6Y160P0 loader) the SA was readable . So i rewrote the original SAA mods with 6Y160M0 mods...and it works even now! (i have a SATA drive instead a PATA drive)

Yes i agree with u areus i have done the same thing with and it works good it is beacuse they use the same CPU and motor controller .

But i have only 1 problem with this drive. The drive is noisy when it seeks, even i had set the aam to quiet. When the aam is disabled...the drive sounds like a little rock-drill.

there are two motor controllers in one is SMOOTH and other is SH6590D both work with each other but if it makes noises while seeking data and works slow . So i suggest u find a pcb with same controller as ur orignal pcb .
