can someone tell me exactly what he is saying in this video please? (english is not
my native language)
I need to understand especially this part :
"a typical scenario is the ????????? failing to park after scanning the drive."

What can you do?

1) Send it to a Pro
2) Try to fix it yourself

#1 has about an 80% chance of success. #2 has about a 5-15% of success (Depending on your skill). Trying #2, then #1 has a 15-70% chance (Depending on what you do). Only you can decide how much your data is worth.

Hello,

I think, your hdd have head problem.
It is possible a little chance to the VCD chip is damaged, but much more to the preamp or some of the heads are died.

The better is to find a pro, i think...

it's making a high pitch noise then a click. This sequence repeats about 15 times.
Then nothing happens (the drive still spins but is not detected)

I have played the mp3.
I know this sound, i heard that a lot of times....
This is head issue, except on one case, when the VCD chip was damaged, and the amplifier can't deliver the perfect power for the VC motor to get the heads on the right position.

I suggest, to find a pro...

preamp damaged only way is a total head head exchange and platter swap
the beep is coming from the ic motor bearings which is failing

Nop. :P

The beep is from the HDA when moving.
This is "normal", if you agree or not.
I heard that on some cases.

This is a changing frequency, during the VCD try to find the correnct position to reach the servo information, but no success.
This can be head / preamp damage, or driving problem, like VCD damage.

Janos

no way is that normal for a hard drive to beep like that
no other hard drives do this except maxtors

possible its the arm stuck or the heads touching the platters.
that sounds means that your drive is failing

he got a preamp damaged and possible motor problems

I sad "normal" not normal. :D
Yes, this is abnormal, because the drive won't work.
But this is not motor problem, it does only maxtor drives. ;)

If you interested, i can reproduce the noise to you. :P

so do you think that replacing the controller board could help
or is it totally useless?

The answer is not too simple.
The best way is measuring the preamp for short circuit and if OK, do the pcb replace.
You need the exactly maching configured pcb. (5 letter code on the connector)
If the preamp is short, your new pcb will be burned.

If the preamp or heads not shorted, just damaged, the drive will be beep again.

on the ide connector there is this code :

SBBLMASY C1GLA 1101607CSU

So I need to find a pcb with this code : C1GLA ?

Can I buy this pcb for example :

http://cgi.ebay.com/MAXTOR-DiamondMax-1 ... 3104r26159

this seems to be the same as mine but it's for a 250 gb hdd, not 200 gb.

Re: hdd won't work !!!! help please

what happened exactly is that the hdd was connected to my laptop
by USB. Then I connected my Ipod to another USB port to transfer
some music on it. But the hdd was still on when I transfered music to the ipod.
Then after a while the hdd started making the noises so I switched it off.
Do you think that connecting the Ipod and the hdd to the laptop at the same time
could have caused the problem and maybe damage the electronics on the hdd pcb ?

I have also noticed that the hdd repeat the high pitch noise + clic sequence about 15 times (as in the mp3 I posted) then it's only spinning and do nothing else.
And it's the same thing everytime I switch it on.

Did plugging in your IPod damage the hard drive? No. Complete coincidence. Will a PCB swap fix bad heads? No. Is there anything you can do? You can send it to a DR Professional. Is your data worth that much? Only you can tell.

this hdd drives me crazy. Listen to this :
This is what happens when I put my fingers on some
components of the pcb :

http://www.filefreak.com/ppublic/31303/MIC_003.mp3

I can make it click faster or even stop and restart the motor.

One chip in particular gets very hot, it's called "Smooth L725DE"
