HITACHI deskstar 250gb sata Motor Jam (no spin)

July 25th, 2008, 2:24

I have Hitachi deskstar hard disk drive has 2 plate and 4 head.

The hard disk is not spining. So I have open the cover and check the hard disk motor. I have applied force to move the motor, but it is jam, no move.

While appling the power head is moving on plat and when power off the head are come back to park. I have applied force to motor when power is on. But nothin happen. Motor remain in same condition.

What to do for the spin?

data is important.

thanks,
amit shah

spindle seized not much you can do unless you know how to do a platter swap

you could allways try and heat the motor side up of the spindle up with a hair dryer
we call them the death star in the trade
as they are well know for failing.

does the hard drive pickup in the bios at all or is not detected

hard disk is not detected in bios.

when the hard drive boots up does the drive try to spin at all ?????
are you sure its seized

the next option would be a total platter swap from the bad drive to a good drive

try and heat the underside of the motor see if that helps you out

Hi amit shah

As far as I known , a motor seized HD definitely can not be detected by BIOS. It is because the FW stored on PCB and Platter SA. Some WD can be recognized but it is only the series (the info on the PCBA), not the correct HD info. (this is the why we can solve some proble by doing Hotswap).

There is no special tool for motor seizure, so you may need swap platters on a mataching working chassis and extract the data.

I hope it can help in some ways.

Best regards

Laura

I have air gun for the Ic soldering.
I have set the air volume maximum and temp. setting is low. It becomes my hair daiyer.

I have given approx. 5 min. on motor at the pcb side. But no result.
Can I give more? or can I have to heat at the platter side?

thanks,

do you have a blow torch? :D it will not work....if the motor is jammed, nothing you can do to fix it, platters must be removed.

On hitachi 3.5" if u take off platters even with the HPE, its very probable the hdd doesnt reach readiness, its very difficult the alignment :( and got readiness

Screws on the hub has a properly selected torque, i.e with a torque adjustment screwdriver it will solved this problem.

No amount of heat will fix this drive.

You have 2 options:
1) Platter swap
2) Design a tool (if you don't already have one) which screws onto the spindle hub. Apply lots of torque and with some practice and patience, you can get the motor spinning.

If the motor is badly damaged, then you may have to resort to a platter swap.

Has anybody ever seen what those motors look like? Its impossible to guess how to break it loose unless we knew the structure of the thing and what may be broken off and jambed. I cant see a greasy bearing being siezed up. Even with age and dryed out, they just tend to wallow out and loose precition causing head crashes. All my bad drives get sent in for exchange, so I have never had the opertunity to fully disect a late model drive.

Good Idea , I am also planning for such type of tool. I have used small screwdirver, and put it in the hole of motor empty slot. and applied lots of torque. Result Scredriver is break. Motor is remain in same state.

you could pop the back cover of the motor, using a hole saw or similar. the fluid motor often jams with bits of crap stuck in, releasing the fluid and crap and it should spin for a while.

this is of course a very very last resort, and probably won't work anyway  enough disclaimers?

The screwdriver is NOT a good idea, there is a real danger that it will slip out of the hole and ruin the platter. In my experience, there is nowhere near enough torque generate to release the bearing this way anyway.

is there any solution for Motor jammed except Platters swap.

Of the hdd's I've looked at, the bearing is a single sealed component consisting of an outer body of about 11.5mm dia. x 20mm length and a 4mm shaft sticking out one end by about 4mm.
The body is pressed into the stator and the rotor which carries the platters, is pressed onto the 4mm shaft.
I'm working on a wd1600 with exactly the same problem.
Pressing the bearing out and back in is the easy part, doing it with utmost accuracy and without any damage/dust/contamination to the platters is the hard part, plus if you have fixed air guides between the platters and/or a tricky to remove head stack then your problems multiply immensely to probably impossible to diy.

If your data is important, take it to a specalist dr

My data is not important, but would be handy to get some bits back, plus I have the time, patience, access to a lathe and skills to machine up tools, technical/electronic skills, very steady hands, more time and patience, spare good drives of the same make and model to rehearse on, a very clean environment and did I mention time and patience!!

Ok, I am not trying to advertise exactly, just answering a question as it is known that I am affiliated with the developers of the tool discussed here - another-platter-transplant-tool-t14686.html

Whilst this tool is currently predominantly for Seagate drives, we have had it working with Hitachi drives, just needs a bit more work to bring it up to an acceptable standard to release.
