Seagate ST3500320AS unable to jump to terminal

August 8th, 2008, 2:40

I have seagate ST3500320AS unable to jump to terminal (yes i have tried setting baud rate to 38400 and Cntrl-Z), this drive is transition between Maxtor to Seagate. Inital startup drive is struggling and few noise not exactly clicking, unable to detect in PC3000 UDMA.

Any idea guys, thank you so much.

Hi,
ST3500320AS - 7200.11

BaudRate=38400 [38400,No,8,1]

Online commands:
Ctrl+A, Ctrl+L -> (PCB+HDA or PCB only!)
Ctrl+U ... -> (PCB+HDA)

ROM is 512kB, and many informations are stored in ROM...

Bad SA so the weird noise ? Is that noise similar to "white noise" , like a hiss ?

hi BlackST , that puzzled me too, it goes RDY but unable to check anything.

Hi TerraNova,

I think you have ROM corruption!
I have exp. same problem few weeks ago.

There are two incompatible things: ROM corruption and 7200.11 drive in ready state :)
That's definitely not ROM corruption I would say it's heads or motor problem

Doomer,

I can uderstand why you are saying It could be weak heads, but why do you think it's motor?

TerraNova,

I can only speak for my case, Doomer is certainly more experienced then I am, and the problem could of course always be something else like heads.
Recently I was experimenting with allot of different drives and created allot of defects and malfunctions for testing purposes. With this drive I edited ROM content. I only changed 4 or 6 bytes and the symptoms that you are experiencing are exactly the same ones that I had after corrupting the ROM.
After I restored the original data to the ROM it worked perfectly again.
Therefore I gave my above comment.

There were some drives exactly ST3500320AS model and they had motor problems, sound was as described in this topic

@doomer, please explain : motor problems mean motor running with noise or unstable bearing so platter vibration ? (Just curious, don't have many seagates here and the ones around seem not to fail more than expected)

I beleive it's both, as I remeber it was necessary to make platter transplant
In this particular case I would start with heads checking to understand the condition of original heads
Bad thing is such drives is pain in the ass concerning heads xplant :(

Thank you all for participating in this,
Hi Doomer how to check the head if no access to terminal? SWAG? Simply Wild Ass Guess? :D FYI the drive is not vibrating violently, it is normal, so i assumed motor problem is eliminated, i have inspected the top platter no problem, i even looked at the magnetic heads under scope and they looked good no obvious sign of scatches.

Quasimodo, how do you alter the ROM? manually download using rom reader and edit it? or using pc3000? I cant even access ROM using pc3000.

Thanks all.
