Seagate Barracuda 7200.11

The serial diagnostic interface has changed on these drives. Anyone got more information on this yet? :?:

You mean previous commands don't work no more ? Yes it is.

I mean change in serial protocol. Not able to access terminal in software like HyperTerminal. Am I right?

I was able to use Hyperterminal on this drive. Set parameters at 38400,n,8,1. Issue CTRL-Z command afterward to enter command mode. Then type CTRL-L to output firmware parameters. However, the commands have definitely changed from previous models so there is not much more you can do after this aside from playing around with some additional CTRL-letter commands.

Hi all, thanks for your replies.

I have two models of 7200.11 that do not respond to CTRL-Z on serial terminal although both drives are functioning normally in all other respects. With these drives there is no "sign-on" message at power-on. The drive models in question are ST3500320AS and ST3750330AS.

However, I have another 7200.11 model, a ST3320613AS, that does report a sign-on message and will allow access to the serial diags with CTRL-Z, although as others have said, the commands are different.

Have you also seen this problem, or do you think that my two drives are bad or perhaps the serial terminal is disabled somehow on these two models? :?:

What do you use to connect the HD to HyperTerminal?

Thanks

Hi MANDR,

I use the PC3000 serial adapter (PC-SEAG.SATA). Why, have the RX,TX pins moved? :o

It is just something I was not aware that could be done! I have PC3000 but have no clue how to access the terminal via Hyper Terminal :)

Yes, it's no problem. I use the serial-USB interface that comes with PC-3K. The driver gives a COM port assignment that can then be used in any serial terminal app.

Hi,
If U use PC USB TERMINAL with Hyper Terminal, it is necessary to change Flow control from Hardware to None (in port settings)

Well got my new toy today "7200.11" so will be digging away :)

as far as I can tell you can set a flag to disable serial output on power up

I don't think that anyone will be producing ANY software in the next few months for commercial sale..And anyone who knows will keep secret for sure.........

Just like the good old days with Fujitsu MPG's..

AceLab was planning to make a release of PC3000 with 7200.11 support by the end of September
