My seagate ST3160828AS 160gb v8.04 only works over a usb adapter but will not detect with the onboard controller. What could be wrong and how can I fix it?

it sounds like the controller is bad, have you tried the disk on another PC direct?

Check cable, jumper position and then the mobo controller.

Was not detectable on another board as well. Controller works fine with other SATA drives. Tried a different cable in this one too.

just connect it via USB, copy the info to a reliable place, and buy a new hard drive. never keep data on a drive that has given you problems, and never play with a readable drive until it has been backed up
