Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi
We have a WD4000KD-00NABO.
The HDD initially seemed to have a HSA issue, however after locating a suitable donor PCB we swapped the ROM, now the media becomes ready with no clicking etc, we can view up to approx 150,000 LBA, however after this point the drive shows, ERR & UNC.
We can not access the SA as PC3K does not support it, so can not check translator etc.
Any ideas?

Did you ever figure this out? I did the same thing you did but I dont have pc-3000 so I dont get anything when I plug the drive in to view. I just dont have a way to do this. Where did you get your pc-3000? Thanks for any reply.

1) In Pc3K try this drive as ZEOS family.
2) ~ 150 000 this is block-size for one head (start from head-0 ). Another heads may be dead, or only head-1 dead. Did it was droped ?
Problem with bad translator ( for this drives), is a rare.
What map of head in ROM ?

Is it true that all i need is to write to a certain hidden sector and the drive will become readable? The hidden sector is like a bios for the drive if i read correctly. Anyone have any ideas on were i can get the software from WD to write to that sector.

WD Only keeps this type of software for internal use only.
In order to modify the SA (Service Area) of an HDD you will need specially developed equipment.
