WD Caviar 205AA clanking hardly

September 5th, 2008, 13:28

Hi all,

I got a WD205AA in which is clanking very hardly. The heads look intact (none missing), the surfaces too. No grinding noise fortunately.
Has anyone experiences with head and/or preamp issues with this rather old model?
Maybe someone knows the pinout of the HDA connector? I'd like to check whether all available data channels are active in some way.
A second 205AA I had in stock shows similar symptoms, also fails to seek, not as loud as the first one - but probably the same problem. One candidate for head/preamp donation less :(

Which preamp is fitted in the mha?

I'll have a look on monday and let you know.
Two minutes before your answer I decided to start the weekend :)
Is their a known issue with a particular type, or is this important for my question about the signal pins on the MHA connector?

Bad head crashes.

What do you mean? I did not see any marks of a head crash, while a bad head is still possible of course. Please explain!

I've seen many with media canyons. Did you open the drive?

Yep, I had a short look into the HDA in the clean cabinet, no traces of head crash related damage as farr as I could see. All six heads are in good shape and no "rings" on the surfaces I've seen (I was not able to look at the lower side of the lower platter)

Sounds like you're ready to roll with some heads.

Yep, I'm already watching two candidates for donation on iPay :)
