I am looking for some help. I have ST3500320AS (500GB). Right now it shows as 0MB on the BIOS. I purchase on ebay an adapter and can connect to the serial port on the drive.
First i thought it was the 0MB issues so tried fix for that but started getting the device busy during the process. I got LED:.... message so I thought it was the BSY error.
When I tried that fix, I got problems spinning the drive

Basically, the drive makes a clicking sound for around 10 seconds (it seems that it clicks eleven times) and then gives the error 1009. This repeats

I have cleaned the contacts already carefully and i am sure i have tighten the screws.

Do i have any hope of recovering the drive? Thanks for any help. I have found others complaining about eleven clicks as well but nobody seem to have resolved it.

Based on those symptoms & that error code, it's very likely to be faulty heads, so not a DIY situation.

(Edited to add: I should make it clear that my day job is not in DR, but elsewhere in the data storage industry. I've just seen several Seagate drives with similar behaviour & error code. You can wait for a DR pro to reply, to get a second opinion )

But I have the same issue with a 320GB Seagate.
I changed the head with a working one but the Terminal still the same.

I am able to get output for all commands like Ctrl+X and Ctlr+L...

in my case, it seems like a firmware issue..
Any expert opinions?

You asked for opinions about your problem in this active thread, which you did not start - that is attempting a thread hijack. I've seen situations where mixing two issues in one active thread, due to a thread hijack, confused the readers and resulted in giving the wrong advice to the wrong member, due to confusion about which problem was which. That could be bad news for you.

Also, by you asking for advice about the same problem on multiple threads, you risk being reported as a spammer and therefore potentially getting banned. Therefore it is a benefit for you not to do this. But if you disagree, just carry on asking for advice in multiple threads, and see what happens! I'm just trying to help, and also trying to prevent confusing threads...

If you want to mention the similarity between your problem and another thread, then mention that similarity in your thread - then no-one could complain about you spamming, nor would readers get confused due to mixing multiple issues on the same thread.

Any body know about a rea$onable way to replace head/preamp?
Do I need to go to Seagate?
There are some local data recovery shops but sometimes look like they are limited on what they could do and use a 3rd party for something like this.
I live in Waterloo, Ontario near Toronto.

I know Seagate will charge a lot of money for data recovery, hoping if all i ask for is head/preamp replacement maybe that is a lot cheaper

If you are suggesting DIY, then that's not realistic, if you really want to recover your data and hence don't want to take excessive risks.

I suggest that you aren't that specific about what the DR company should do. For example, would you really want them to send the drive back to you after just replacing the HSA, but without also recovering the data onto another drive while the drive is still with them? Or would you still want them to charge you for doing exactly what you ask, even though that will be futile if the media is found to be destroyed, when they open the HDA?

Instead I suggest you choose a reputable DR company, listen to them (after all, they will be experienced in this type of situation), and see what they suggest as a plan. It's going to involve some initial diagnosis (which they can do with the drive in their hands, but readers here cannot do remotely via this web forum), and then they'll be able to explain what they suggest as the next stage. Just like with doctors doing surgery, you shouldn't decide everything before opening the patient, as you can't be sure what you'll find on the operating table... Hope those comments help. Other readers may be able to make more suggestions too. Good luck!

which is $1100

I want to recover personal pictures (don't know for sure but likely 20G-30GB) and really dont value the pictures that much as to pay $1k.
Anybody else with a more other tips/rates can ping me? I can ship the drive

$900-$1100 is about right for this drive, they can be pigs.

You should be suspicious of any "lab" offering a significantly lower price than this.
