Toshiba 500GB MK5065GSXN with repeated "thunk thunk"

November 26th, 2013, 22:40

Was working yesterday, though apparently with some read/write issues.

Today I check the drive in the diagnosis machine and it fires up with a repeated "thunk" noise that never stops. On powering down the drive there's a small whine.

Possible failure cause?

Mechanical and/or head crash.

Thanks... better quote the client on a possible cleanroom recovery cost.

"Possibly" = "definitely" and be prepared for media damage :-(
