CRC Error on External Drive

January 15th, 2014, 14:13

I have external drive that now is giving CRC Error while accessed from either Explorer or Disk Management. The contents are not visible either. It does not allow to format either. Is there any chance to get it working even if the data is lost?

Sounds like bad sectors (media degradation).

If you don't need the data then bin it and move on....

What is the model of the external drive? How does HD Sentinel identify it?

Thanks for the reply. I have not used any tool to verify the health of the HDD. All I have explained is what I experienced through Windows Explorer and Disk Management. I can revert back to you after verifying the health through HDD Sentinel. I would appreciate if you could share the link where I can download the fully functional version of it. Thanks.

strangely, it is at http://www.hdsentinel.com and for AU$30 you get a fully functioning copy.

If you mean free, make a DOS bootable disk and download the DOS version which is free.

You don't need the full version. There are other tools, but AISI HD Sentinel tries to talk to the drive behind the bridge. If that fails, it then reports the information it gets from the bridge PCB.
