Identifying SATA Drive Board Problem

January 15th, 2014, 13:22

I have a Western Digital WDS5000AAKS WD Caviar SE16 SATA HDD. I was using this HDD internally in a system (Not Laptop), but then decided to use it as an external drive and for the purpose I bought SATA to USB converter and started using it as an external drive. The SATA to USB connector needed an adapter as well for the whole operation to work i.e. Adapter plugged into the power connector of HDD and Data connector connected to the USB connector which connects into the System/Laptop.

In order to minimize the Adapter requirement for the HDD, I took another connector which I was using for another drive (Laptop Drive) and plugged into the 3.5" SATA HDD Drive and tried to connect to my System/Laptop, but it did not worked. Why it did not work? Can it work?

When I tried to use the SATA to USB connector again on the HDD, the HDD does not work as previously. It powers on and shows after a very longtime in the Disk Management, but does not allow me to do any operation on it i.e. access data in it, not even Format and it keeps on going off and on in the Disk Management, sometimes not even appearing in the Disk Management.

Did me connecting 2.5" SATA to USB connector had anything to do with it? If so, how can one verify and more importantly, how can I get my HDD working? It is not even allowing to format it. It is not making any noises either. It is relatively new HDD.

Thanks in advance.
