What tool (other than a script) can I use to permanently set the ERC value of a ST31000524AS drive? I can use smartctl to change the values, but once the drive is power-cycled the value returns to the default (disabled).
Thanks folks.

I suspect that it may be possible to set the ERC timeout values by modifying appropriate Congen parameters.
See
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27413&start=20You may like to compare the Congen data against those from an enterprise model, eg ES.2.

Sorry, bit of a n00b here I guess. From looking at that thread it appears that Congen is nvram or some such on the drive? What tool does one use to modify this?

You need an RS232 TTL adapter. Commands are issued to the drive's serial terminal port using a tool such as HyperTerminal or PuTTY.
