External HD, MaxTor Diamond 21 STM3320620A

I've had this external drive a few years. It's loaded with lots of music, movies. Well I pulled it out from where I keep bit haven't used it over a yr. So I plug it in to power supply and USB to computer and all it will do is the power light just flashes. Listen a fan is working. But listening to the HD all I hear is a ticking sound exactly like a second had on a watch. It worked fine before when it was put away. Is it history? I know little about HD's or for that matter really a whole lot about computers but the basics. Any idea or help will be appreciated very much. Good or bad. thank you.

It might just be a possible enclosure problem. If you're comfortable getting your hands on to it, you can try pulling out the drive out of the enclosure and connect it directly to your PC internally.

Probably a weak power adapter. Take it to someone with the means to test the drive without its enclosure or try an identical power adapter.
