ST2000DM001 undetectable by BIOS

August 26th, 2014, 15:28

Hello

Does anyone know a way to get back to life this 2TB, that suddenly disappeared from OS during work?
Now BIOS doesn't see it, nor does external SATA-USB adapter.
When I plug the power the disk spins up and I can hear platters swirling.
No disturbing sounds whatsoever.
I think it may be bricked or something.
The original firmware was CC4C.
I've updated it to CC4H, but that didn't help.
I really need to get that data back.

I connected the drive to terminal and putty threw me something like this:

Boot 0x40M
Spin Up
TCC-0018[0x00026F7C][0x000273E8][0x00027854][0x00027880][0x00027880]ZZZZMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMddddddW
PreampFaultStatus = 0000YW
PreampFaultStatus = 0000YWMMMMMM

What does that mean?
I'll appreciate any suggestions...

Best regards

As always, if data is really valuable, take it to Pro DR.

PCB seems OK ? Like log said, It seems to be Preamp Fault.... This might be really dead Preamp (BIG problem), or just missing voltage/ damaged PCB. Post photos of PCB both sides.

BTW Do anybody have idea what are these ZZZZMMMM in terminal ?? Maybe its unstable voltage which cause MCU executing incorrect instructions.

How did you update the firmware if the drive is not working?

Maybe I didn't put it right. My bad.
Of course I have upgraded drive's firmware before it went unoperative.

I need to get myself an appropriate torx to disassemble PCB.
When I do I'll post the pictures.

Uhm, to be exact; You have updated firmware, restarted PC and HDD stopped working ?

Something like that Jano952.

lets say you have a scrabble board(HDD firmware) on that board there are 5 words and 2 are spelt wrong(firmware and drive parameters specific to the drive). So how do you fix it? Upgrading the firmware can be thought of as replacing that scrabble board with a new one.

copy the old data (the words, including wrongly spelt ones) somewhere. swap the board for a new shiny perfect one, then copy the words back.

Now you have a brand new board with 5 words, 2 spelt wrong. See what I am getting at?

back when you had the first sign of problems is when you should have posted here. I am saying this for others that might be reading this.

I hope you can get your data back, but might need a DR company now.

Did the firmware update readme say that the update was safe to do with data on the drive, or it was a data destructive update?

It says:

"If the firmware upgrade installation instructions are not followed properly, the firmware upgrade could be data destructive and/or render your hard drive inoperable."

But I am sure I did everything as described...

Maybe you did update with proper procedure but failed due to hdd issue or computer issue.
Upgrading the firmware in that conditions is never a good move!

Data Recovery companies deal with all sorts of issues every day. If you take it to one there is a very much higher chance you can get your data back than if you try something else. I don't think this is a DIY case anymore.
