hi I've never had a drive go bad on me like this so i didn't know what to do originally the drive stopped working because of a power surge. So i sent the drive of to a company who did a basic bodge job and removed the pcb and swapped it over to another board, but while doing so they managed to chip of a bit of the ROM chip. they sent the drive back to me and I've now sent the drive to another company who had a look at it and said the drive is not recoverable in anyway because the rom chip is destroyed.

unfortunately i can't take a picture of the rom chip at this moment because i sent it of to the recovery company soon as i get it i'll post it up, but its one of the edges thats chipped of the black cover or casing nothing inside is visible.

What do you mean with destroyed rom chip?
1) briched pins
2) burned chip
3) corrupted content

If it has bricked pins i can recover it for you, but if the chip is burned or rom content is completely corrupt then i can't help you.
I know only one guy in this forum that is able to recover data from seagate drives with lost rom, he lives in Portugal.

Rebuilding the rom from zero is very expensive (thousand $) and not sure that will work!!

its the actual chip itself theres a chunk of it missing in one of the corners its around 10% but nothing inside the rom chip is visible its the plastic on the edge thats chipped off. i'm trying to get the company recovering it to send me a photo of the rom chip so you guys can see it.

and PC image its an external expansion seagate drive capacity 4TB

How is it known for sure that ROM is gone ?

Anyway even if it is gone it should not be a problem except the cost, probably not worth - well, it's you decide.

You should find someone in your area who can handle your case as end user.

that is a s**t company, you should seek damages for a shoddy job especially on a small rom chip.

Who were these clowns who damaged the chip?

The really sad part of this story is that the problem was most likely something you could have fixed yourself for nothing, or at most US$50. :-(

Maybe the chip just needs to have leads resoldered to it, or wirebonded. Easy stuff if the silicon substrate is intact.
