One of the reasons I'm so unsure is that a few years back I discovered a plant that I really liked. I'm a gardener and I just fell in love with it. It was called an encephalartos horridus. Well as it turns out, those plants are endangered and importing them to the US is forbidden. The ONLY way to get one is from a grower who has germinated seeds passed down from older plants imported before the ban was in place. They are also VERY difficult to germinate. On top of that they are highly sought after by rare plant collectors. As you may have guessed, these plants are extremely expensive and those who grow them are extremely guarded about their techniques and where to get the most viable seeds and the best soil mix, temperature, etc...etc... So I couldnt afford to get this plant that I wanted but I could afford to get a few seeds, some pollen and try to germinate a few. So I got on a cycad growers forum for advice. I was ridiculed and so on for being so naive as to to think that I, as a mere mortal could possibly get a seed to grow with no experience and no knowledge of equipment or chemicals. Well I gave it a shot anyway and a couple of the seeds died but some of them grew and now I have six healthy plants. They are worth about $800 apiece.

So i find myself thinking....is the same thing happening again?

well I dont think it is, I think everyone is really being honest that my chances of getting this drive recovered are slim to none if I try a major hardware fix like a head or platter swap. i think after I exhaust my software options, I might try a live PCB swap but I dont think I'll go any further than that.

This is best explanation of how logic should not be used.
One of the reasons I do not coment topics in general chat anymore in any place...
