I plugged in my external hdd into a friends computer with a faulty usb drive and found out that it over volted my drive. when i removed it there was a smell of something that had gotten burnt.

There seems to be no physical damage on the drive, i read a person had removed a diode and it worked. Do you thin that will work in my case?

I just need it to run long enough to copy my files.

They should work, it only needs a small X screw driver, and be gentle when removing the PCB. More then likely only the Diod is blown and possibly a fuse or Zero Ohm resister died, should be easy to fix as along as your Preamp is okay.

We will need a high quality image of the other side of the PCB to guide you.

That said, I can't see any additional protection device such as a TVS diode, so I wouldn't bridge the fuse without first determining and eliminating the reason for its failure. I could help you take some measurements with a multimeter.

If all else fails, just replace the PCB and transfer the "ROM" (aka "BIOS" IC) from patient to donor. Some PCB suppliers (eg hdd-parts.com) include this service in the price.

As for the screws, they look like regular Phillips head.

Ummm, he might have to replace the PCB, If there is no TVS Diode then thats taking a huge risk in case the preamp could get blown if power is sent into the PCB with a damaged component.

If he can upload images then we can see if any of the smooth controller is blown too...

Strange they did not add a DIODE to the PCB???

P.S, I just had another thought, what would happen if the USB connection was not inserted correctly and 5v went down one of the USB data lines instead. Would that cock the main MCU or anything else? Something like that happened to my USB hub and that blew because of it and luckily it was NOT transfered to the two USB drives attached to it... I think this could have happened in this case.

I personally don't think I've ever fixed a Toshiba where it was just a blown TVS diode. Most (in my memor) don't even seem to have them. But replacing PCB with ROM transfer usually works in these cases.

The problem is i live in India and finding a pcb replacement is next to impossible, i would have to buy a brand new one and i really don't have then funds, or the want to spoil a new hdd. Do you think there is another way? I ordered the screwdriver . It should arrive in a few days

I'm sure there will be a new PCB on ebay and they might ship to you cheaply.
