Hello

I got a power loss and since one of my hard drive, a caviar green 3tb can't be used. On windows startup, it take a very long time for the pc to boot (it's a secondary drive), it finally boot after 2-3 minutes. In Windows the disk usage is at 100% all the time. I can see the drive but can't navigate on it. In hard disk sentinel the drive say 100% health, no bad sector at all yet I can't access it. I have tryed to refresh the data with a read + refresh cycle + write hardware test and it freeze right at the beggining on initialize.

The drive a little less than 3 years old, no warranty anymore. Can I try anything to revive it ?

Use a a DR software to recover your files, SAVE THEM in another drive, then wipe the disk and format it, see if it's behaving normally.

I have made a board swap with the help of onepcbsolution but the problem is the same. Out of solution I have opened the drive and the head is not stuck and the spindle/platter rotate freely.

I finally was able to access the files, but the drive is extremely slow. I copy a file from it at 500-900ko/s. It would take a month and a half to copy the entire hard drive at this rate, if it don't fail in the meantime.

In hard disk sentinel pro, the hard drive health and performance is 100%, no bad sector at all.

Is their something I can do to restore the drive to it's original state and performance ? Maybe that a quick format would repair the begining of the drive and I could use a recovery software to restore the data at full speed then ?

Or it is another part of the drive that have failed that I could change ? I'm out of idea. Thanks.

I did try to repair the drive using hard disk sentinel pro reinitialize test. It started well but jammed at 5%, then the situation became worse. It was making louder noise and wasn't recognized by the system anymore.

I was able to take screenshots of the files before the test and I'm happy with that. Thanks for the help.

Hey there philippepom,

I would recommend running WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool to see if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests. It is possible that during the power outage the read/write head fell on the platter, damaging it and forcing the OS to try to read it several times before moving on, even though the diagnostic tools don't detect it. Here's a link to the WD tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=UgBDXI

If you have a backup of your files, you might fix some of the issues by filling the drive with zeros. The tool also gives you this option.
I would contact our live support for some useful advice, even though the change of the PCB voids any warranty that the drive might have left. http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ugQIWe

This is a professional data recovery forum. Nobody who values his reputation recommends the HDD manufacturer's tool. HDD manufacturer's tools are aimed at minimising warranty returns. They do do provide the kind of information that the user needs to know.
